Maui Salsa Bachata Congress brings:

This international Salsa singer from Barrio Pozas in Ciales (Puerto Rico) is one of the best flawless lead vocals of the Salsa genre. His first influences were the great Cuban artists: Beny Moré and Miguelito Cuní.

Santiago began his professional career singing with trios and playing guitar and bass on his native island. He was a member of the Chuíto Vélez band, where he was called “El puertorriqueño Elvis Presley”.

His career reached an exponential rise when he joined Willie Rosario & Willie Rodríguez, and Ray Barretto’s band.

Between 1966 and 1972, Adalberto recorded seven studio albums with Ray Barretto that contained hits such as “Quítate La Máscara” and “Alma Con Alma”. At the end of 1972, Adalberto and four other members of the Barretto band set out to found Typical 73 with which he recorded three albums.

In the mid-1970s he formed Los Kimbos orchestra. In 1977 he began his solo debut. Two years later Adalberto released his second album with Louie Ramírez’s co-production “Popeye El Marino”. Since 1980 Santiago has recorded four excellent albums, among which are: Cosas del Alma and Sex Symbol, which contain one of Santiago’s greatest solo songs, “La Noche Más Linda Del Mundo”.

Adalberto Santiago has written songs for several of the albums in which he has appeared, both as lead singer and soloist, and he has provided compositions for other artists to record, such as Joe Cuba. He has appeared in Robin William’s movie “Moscow on the Hudson” and provided music for “Carlito’s Way” by Al Pacino, as well as appearing as himself in the movie “Our Latin Thing”.

This amazing Salsa singer has remained true to his Latin roots and a statement he made in 1977 is still more in force than ever: “I want to bring a truly Latin message to the people; this is what I do best and the structure of Salsa is best suited to my singing style”.

Adalberto, now in his 80s, continues to record and perform in the United States, Europe and South America celebrating six decades of trajectory.
