Tango Jazz Quartet is a prime example of the enchantment bestowed by cross-cultural mingling. Based in Argentina, the four-piece band mixes its two namesake traditions, as one would hear in their hometown Buenos Aires in the 1940s and ’50s.

One of the Bay Area’s most popular dance bands, Orchestra Latin Heat provides the soundtrack for the Fest’s official salsa after party on Friday night. Featuring a swinging 3 piece horn section, fiery rhythms and authentic Latin percussion and vocals, the band performs sizzling salsa, merengue, Latin jazz, cumbia and more.

Whether encouraging an instrumentalist from behind the kit or unveiling her own kinetic solo, drummer Sylvia Cuenca is both a steady presence and an all-encompassing force on the bandstand. The San Jose native has played with jazz legends and leads her own all-star quartet at 2018 Summer Fest. Cuenca moved to New York City when she was 21 at the encouragement of drummer and former teacher Victor Lewis. She’s also shared the bandstand with other late greats including tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and vocalists, Etta Jones and Ernestine Anderson.

Orquesta Saboricua is made up of some of the Bay Area’s best salsa players. The members of the Orquesta Saboricua include: Tony Acevedo (Vocalist), Julio Colon (Trombonist), Steve Marshall (Saxophonist and Flutist), José Santiago (Bongo),   and Ali Choco Luna (Conga), who has been performing since he was 10 years old. He’s shared the stage with artists like Edwin Pabon, Chichito Cepeda and among others.

Edgardo Cambon has delighted Salsa dancers with his band for over three decades. The Cambon’s repertoire will pull from all four of his albums along with some skilfully rearranged Salsa classics, all while holding his “Tumbao” on the congas. Edgardo Cambon returns to the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest with his Candela band.

A 2006 Grammy winner and 2018 nominee, Doug Beavers has performed, arranged and recorded for Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Willie Colón, Mingus Big Band, Ruben Blades, Típica ’73, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Paul Simon and countless others. As a leader, he’s recorded four critically acclaimed albums; his most recent release, Art of the Arrangement (Artistshare, 2017), garnered critical acclaim. Currently, Beavers tours, records, produces and engineers for top New York and international artists. Always a strong advocate for music education, he teaches an extensive number of annual masterclasses and workshops in Mexico and Colombia, and at his studio in New York City with the New York Jazz Workshop.

10-piece Orquesta Borínquen is one of the Bay Area’s longest-running salsa groups. Boasting a four-piece horn section rooted in Latin soul, Borínquen performs a vast repertoire that spans from Hard Salsa to Romantic Salsa. One of Borínquen’s secrets weapons is lead singer Carlos Xavier, who has seamlessly handled their vocal duties for over eight years. He is considered one of the best salsa singers in the Bay Area, his keen ability to authenticate multiple styles of music stems from growing up surrounded by music of all kinds.

Avance consists of some of the hottest Bay Area talents: four electrifying bilingual singers, a sizzling horn section, and one of the best rhythm sections on the West Coast. Their unique sound crosses the language barrier. Avance’s musical productions combine and fuse all the different styles of salsa: Puerto Rican, Cuban, New York and Colombian, spiced with R&B and pop. Avance has released four albums that showcase their diversity and innovation.

With its taut rhythm section, commanding woodwinds and charismatic vocalists, Orquesta Son Mayor is Southern Californian salsa royalty. Rooted in the musicality of four Mexican-American brothers from Los Angeles, the three-decade old ensemble delights dance floors with a classic salsa sound whenever they play.
